KEPHART While there are other spelling
variants, ie: Gearhart, no evidence of other variants are evident in this
country.
.1.Nicholas Kephart (ca.1733‑ca.1829)
Nicholas is documented as
having come to this country from Switzerland.
.2.Andrew Kephart (1778‑prior 1860)
Andrew appears in the 1850
census near Henry Kephart, his brother, and also near Jacob Coder and son John
J. Coder. Andrew also has a daughter Susanah of the proper age to become John
J. Coder's wife. One other Susan Kephart of the proper age is found in 1850
census for Clearfield County, and that is in the household of David Kephart.
The wife in that household is Nancy and in the 1860 census, Catherine Kephart,
same age as Andrew's wife is living with Susan & John Coder. Andrew is
presumed dead in 1860.
.3.Susannah Kephart (4‑Aug‑1840/4‑Mar‑1931)
Susan Kephart is documented
thru her death certificate and in the 1860 census, where her mother Catherine
Kephart is living with her and her husband John J. Coder.
.4.Amasa Wilks - While not directly meaningful to the Kephart
Line, the name Amasa Wilks played a meaningful role upon some of their
decedents.
The original Amasa
Wilks married Penina Kephart, 1.1.4.3. Penina's sister, Susannah, married John Coder and they named
their first son Amasa Wilks Coder, 1.1.4.4.1.
Amasa Coder's sister, Mary Catherine Coder married Martin Hover Bloom and they
named their first son Amasa Wilks Bloom, 1.1.4.4.3.1.
Amasa Bloom and Eva Taylor named their youngest son Amasa Wilks Bloom, 1.1.4.4.3.1.6.
The relationship
between the first Amasa Wilks Bloom and Amasa Wilks developed and Amasa Wilks
Bloom was known to have made annual visits to Virginia to visit Amasa Wilks.
During the late 1800's, Amasa Bloom moved to Virginia for a time. Their
daughter, Lily was born there in 1899.

Among the papers filed under
Kephart, are family sheets for Nicholas Kephart, son Henry Sr. & Henry Jr.
There are more in a set of
genealogies on the shelves but at the time I was there, I ran out of time to
research further.

Page 541, Simon Kephart.
He (Simon) is a son of
George & Mary Ann Kephart, and a Grandson of Henry Kephart and a great‑grandson
of Nicholas Kephart.
Nicholas Kephart was born in
Switzerland, one of six brothers, and they all came to America in 1750 and
settled in Eastern Pennsylvania. They were sturdy men and their excellent
qualities were perpetuated through large and vigerous families and the name is
not an unusual one in Pennsylvania.Nicholas Kephart married Mary Fry, who was
of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction and possibly was born in Berks Co.
Henry Kephart, son of
Nicholas and Mary Kephart was probably born in Penn's Valley. He often referred
to that section and it is known that he came from there in 1804 and settled two
miles west of Osceola Mills where he took up an improved claim, on which he
lived until he was seventy‑one years of age. ....

Heinrich Gebhardt (Henry
Kephart or Capehart). (b in Rhine Valley, 1725‑d1793; son of Heinrich
Gebhart (b Basel, Switz., 1699); g.son of Heinrich, of Basel, m. Barbara
Grunauer), came to America on the St. Andrew to Phila. Sept 23, 1752, with his
wife, dau. Rachel and son Johannes; pvt. 1st Co., 1st Bn., Cumberland Co. Pa.
Milita. Am. Rev., as of Aug 1780, and July 1781. His younger bros. Hans Jacob,
David Andre as, and Nicholas arrived in 1752, 1754 and 1747 respectively.
This patrician Gebhardt
family of Basel descended successively from Rudolf Zingg Gebhart (ca. 1470‑1542),
innkeeper, judge, councilor and benefactor (with his brother Kronrad, chief
magistrate) at Rheinfelden, Aargau, Switz.,post 1500, and his wife Katherina:
Kronrad Zingg (1440‑1509). chief magistrate (1483 at Tuttlingen,
Wurttemberg, and later innkeeper at Rheinfelden: and Rudolf Zingg (Zincke or
Zingge), (ca. 1400‑1470), domain magistrate (1445) at Karpfen (Hohenkarpfen),
Wurttemberg. The surname Zingg (Zincke or Zingge) meant Medival cornet and it
was assumed by descs. of Volenant (de Erlach) am Rennweg (ca. 1162‑1230),
a knightly magistrate., ie., a poet and a master of the zincke (a minnesinger
and asso. of Walther von der Vogelweide), at Wurzburg, Lower Karrenpfad (ca.
1134‑1175) and g.g.son of Lord Henricus de Erlich (ca. 1076‑1147),
seated in the great bend of the Main River, about 10 miles southeast of
Wurzburg, where Erlich village today surrounds the old moated castle. Erlich is
from "Erie‑ach," meaning alder‑place at a waters edge.
Lord Hugebert (Hugebert or
Hucpreht) de Erlach (ca.1028‑1100), son of a Danish Viking sea‑king
whose desc. settled in southern Limberg, Netherlands, in 885, was granted this
domain by Count‑Bishop Adelberoof Wurzburg ca. 1055 as guardian of ch.
property. His son Henricus (ca. 1054‑1099)m. a dau. of Lord de
Randersaker and lived nearby at Marsberg. This son, with his own son Henricus
(ca. 1076‑1147), comd. a detachment of knights under Godfrey de
Bouillonon the first Crusade and designed and assumed the Erlach armorial
insignia at the siege of Antioch in November, 1097; the father was killed at
the capture of Jerusalem on July 15,1099, and the son returned early in 1103 and
took over the Erlich barony;
