Note*   Christian [The following was extracted from Elijah Fuller, grandson of Christian Shocky.] I often heard it said, we had In Salisbury but one log church, and the first minister your writer remember was a man by the name of Haute; he preached and taught school. attended his school; he died and they were quite a tong time getting another. It was announced there was a new minister coming, and grandfather and grandmother were very attentive to their church service. So the minister was late in making his appearance that day, as he had to come from Berlin, fifteen miles distant and they waited patiently and finally he made his appearance, came in and walked up and into the pulpit, removed his German Cloak and gave out a hymn. Grandfather, eyeing him very closely Shortly rose and walked out. Persons coming from church after the services noticed grandfather sitting on his porch inquired of him if he become sick seeing that he had not remained for the completion of the service when he replied no: but they insisted knowing why his unusual act, and becoming tired of their questioning him, finally said that the preacher was one of the nine hundred Hessians they captured at the battle off Trenton. He could not sit quiet under his voice as his blood became very hot; he hated them and therefore, could not listen to his preaching. A committee was appointed to wait on him, and questioning him at first he denied it, and grandfather said bring him before me and I will make him acknowledge it, and he did acknowledge it, rather than appear before him, and grandfather never went near him, not having any more confidence in him as a preacher than he did as Hessian soldier. In 1822 he announced himself as a candidate for Sheriff of Somerset County, Pennsylvania. 'Fellow Citizens of Somerset County. Having spent the bloom of my youth in six campaigns, suffering Cold and hardship to assist in wrestling liberty from a tyrant and still being willing to serve you, and being solicited by numerous friends, I offer myself as a candidate for the office of sheriff at the ensuing general election. I trust a soldier of the Revolution will not appeal to Americans in vain. And should I be honored with a majority of your votes I pledge myself to discharge the duties of the office with generosity and impartiality. CHRISTIAN SHOCKEY, Elk Lack Township, Ray 15, 1022.' In this canvass was defeated, being beaten by Isaac Ankuny. He served through the war and was wounded at the battle of the Cowpens. A British soldier attempted to sever his head from hit body with his sword, but was himself killed by Shoekey's bayonet. Shoekey, however, received a severe wound in his arm, it receiving the blow intended for his head. He settled at Salisbury among the early pioneers, and for many years followed school teaching. Grandfather was an accomplished scholar of his day. He taught school in his old days, being a fine penman. He received a pension up to his death and grandmother up to the time of her demise. Some instances related by grand-father are worth recorded . Among others were the following, I often heard him remark that in marching they would secure old bones found along the wayside and boil them and make soup, never knew and cared very little what kind of bones, hunger was great and must be satisfied. In marching, he licked his company to follow in the rear, for when they had no shoes and the ground was frosty and hard and their feet would bleed and thus soften the earth for those who followed and did not hurt their feet as would otherwise. In those early days the mountain streams abounded with the speckled trout and grandfather was quite an angler, How often I remember of accompanying him fishing. Further research into Christian Shockey indicates that he was not always the 'model citizen' that his later life indicated. In fact, in the initial stages of the Revolutionary War, he seemed to have developed the habit of enlisting, deserting and then enlisting again. Several times this scenario developed, until the following incident. This close brush with 'terminating his very existence' seemed to have been the turning point of his maturation. CHRISTIAN CHRISTOPHER SHOCKEY Proceedings of a General Court Martial held at York Town 12 June 1778 By order of the Board of War, Col. Hartley, President There were twelve members on the Board The Court Being duly sworn, Proceeded to the trial of Christian Shockey a soldier or Col. Hartley's Reg. charged with desertion and stealing two horses belonging to the public. The prisoner pleads guilty to the charge of desertion, but denies Stealing the horses. Sergeant Kenny of Col. Hartly's Reg. being sworn deposeth that on Wednesday 18 bringing the prisoners from Carlisle, the prisoner told him that last summer when he deserted, his brother Abraham Shockey who persuaded him took two horses, one of which the prisoner rode fifteen miles, his brother the other, and there they were put into a pasture. Lt. Mahan deposeth that the night the prisoner deserted, two horses were taken and Carried off from a wagon the prisoner drove. Lt. Walker deposeth that the Prisoner deserted from his company last spring, enlisted in another regiment and was brought to camp and pardoned, that about one or two months afterward he deserted a second time and two horses being missing from the team that morning after he went away it was supposed he had taken them. Mr. Beauford being sworn and called upon for the prisoners general character disposeth that he was some time ago near Nicholsons Gap. the place where it was said a number of people had counterfeited money, that he was informed the prisoner who was a deserter lived in that neighborhood and was connected with the people who were suspected of Counterfeiting the money, that he heard a very bad Character of him and endeavored to take him, but could not find him. The prisoner, in his defense, says that he was informed last summer that his wife and three Children were turned out of doors by his neighbors and were then without a place to put their heads in. That believing his family in this situation, he deserted in order to give them all the assistance in his power. When he got home he found his wife and Children in the stable of his brother. (note that Christian did not marry, of have any children until after the war) In answer to the charge of stealing the horses, he says his brother who persuaded him to desert took both, and led both of them a mile or two before he would consent to ride. Then at length being over persuaded he took one of these horses, and rode about fifteen miles and then both of the horses were put into a pasture. The court after due Consideration of the evidence before them are unanimously of opinion that the prisoner is guilty of the Charges exhibited against hem, and the said court do sentence him to Suffer death under the first article of the Sixth section Of war. The court (most the members of which were on the trial of John King, Jr.) wishing that there may be but one execution and hearing of the penitent behavior of Ring since his trial do beg leave to recommend the said John King to his Excellency General Washington. Shockey has been taken since the formal trial and is considered as the fittest abject for punishment. The Court desires that the proceedings be immediately sent to the General. Thomas P. Hartley President To COLONEL THOMAS HARTLEY Head Quarters, June I4, I778. (Valley Forge) Sir: I this Evening received your Letter of the 13th Instant, with the papers to which it alluded. It appears to me, from a consideration of the respective proceedings, that both King and Shockey might be executed affably to their sentences, without the imputation of a rigorous severity. However as the Court Martial have interposed a petition in favor of the former, which has also received a sort of countenance from Congress, by their suspending his executions I grant him a pardon. I also pardon Shockey, as the crime of which he has been convicted altho' clearly proved according to the proceedings, does not seem to me to deserve death more than King's; Indeed, in the conduct of King, there were some circumstances leading to consequences of greater political criminality. (From the letters of General George Washington) It bears noting that following these circumstances, Christian Shockey went on to become a fine solder, was promoted to Corporal and granted a Pension for both himself and his widow.1
